Insanity and advertising
Speaking of advertising, have you ever seen a commercial that made you think "is the advertising company that produced this commercial insane?".... well I have. Here are some of my favorites.
What are they trying to say here? That if you buy this car you will be as awesome as a traveling hamster.... Crazy!
I feel like I am being bombarded by happy sunshine people in morning too. I understand why this commercial was never aired but I wish it was.
Now I know why this commercial was never air but it makes me feel so great!
You may not believe this but this is an ad for Diesel jeans.
What is so wonderful about these ads is that because they are strange and unconventional, it creates a buzz. Though some of the ads have never been aired and show the produce for just a moment (or some times not at all) they are still doing a good job at getting the word out there about the product.

The Guerilla in the room
Advertising is all a round us so much so that we don't always pay attention to what we are looking at, and how it is effecting us; that is why I decide to focus this post on "guerilla marketing". First let me give a bit of an explanation of what "guerilla marketing" is: the origin of the term comes from guerilla warfare, ( a way of warfare in which irregular combat uses the element of surprise to strike a target, and withdraw quickly). Guerilla marketing using low-cost unconventional means to get consumers attention, cause a sensation and linger in the subconsciousness of people for a long time. Here are some of my favorite example of guerilla marketing:

ffffound
While looking through one of my favorite sites ffffound.com I came across a couple of great example of visual explanation and I wanted to share them with you all out there.
I love this photo! The deterioration of the car and the harsh words spray painted across the car.
This illustration tells a whole story with out saying a word.

This illustration is from a Betty Crocker cook book called "Dinner for Two Cookbook" published in 1958. I found this gem on codex99.com.
California
This week's "Show and Tell" is about finding a visual and a verbal definition or explanation. One of the first things I thought of was a video for the 1990's by Wax directed by Spike Jones. The first time I saw the video I was 10 years old and living in Los Angeles, California. It was right after the Northridge earthquake. I was just a kid and already so disaffected, but I remember the music video taking my breath away.
The video starts with a close up of shoes on fire and then slowly zooms out to a shot of a man running in slow motion. The man continues to run down the street until he turns a corner and is blocked from view by a bus. The camera them pans to reveal a girl in the back of a car watching the entire scene with an expression of numbness on her face.
I chose this as an example of visual explanation because it is a one-shot video which shows that violence is so common that even when something spectacularly horrible happens in front of us, we just turn away.

Night before class with visions of sugar plums dancing in my head.
I have been looking at food photography all day: good food photos, bad food photos, strange food photos. So many photos that I wanted so share some.
Look at this... just look... take in all in. Now imagine yourself alone in hot room with no air conditioning and this salad. Feel the mayo melting!
There is no way this girl is letting anyone have a piece of her birthday cake. She looks like a biter!
This hero of the pizza wars of 1985 lost an eye fighting the Ninja Turtles for the rights to live, love, and be covered in pepperoni.

Late Night Snack
Up late doing research on on my ingredient (asparagus) for one of my concepts and the musical Oliver! popped into my head and I thought I would share it with all of you out there. Perhaps you too were thinking how glorious food can be especially after all the research.
Anyways, my research is going well. I have learned some of the history of the asparagus officinalis. Asparagus played an important role in the ancient world. It was pictured on as an offering on an Egyptian frieze dated 3000 BC. It also was used as a medicine by the ancient Romans and Greeks. Not sure if I will use any of this information in the project 1 assignment, but I found it to be pretty cool anyway.

Arch Enemy
Now I would like to turn to the dark side of food photography. One of the worst food items ever created in my opinion was the Arch Deluxe from McDonald's, circa 1996 . I remember watching the commercials that would come on and thinking, "That looks horrible!" The footage of the hamburger and all the fixings was badly shot and I couldn't image anyone wanting to eat it. I guess that is why McDonald no longer sells it, but it will always live on in food legend.
Food and Image
This week's assignment for my Saturday class Words and Image was to research good food-writing and find an ingredient to write about. The first place I looked was Martha Stewart Living. The writing in this magazine has always impressed me. I chose an article that highlights three unappreciated ingredients: lemon, parsley, and Parmesan cheese. Here is the full article.
I really enjoyed the article's exciting take on everyday ingredients. I have made many of its recipes since I first read the article, and in fact, I am making the pasta with lemon, parsley & parmesan tonight.
